Six Apart, purveyors of blogging platforms such as Movable Type, TypePad and VOX, sold LiveJournal (LJ) to SUP, a Russian online media company. The move comes less than three years after Six Apart acquired LJ.
Last year, SUP entered an agreement with Six Apart to manage the Russian segment of the LJ userbase; this included the launch of a Russian version of LJ. The new acquisition will spin LJ off as its own company — LiveJournal, Inc. — which will remain headquartered in San Francisco. Six Apart will maintain some involvement in LJ for at least the next year.
LJ has set up a new user community to address concerns regarding SUP’s acquisition, including an extensive FAQ. Those of us (like me) with permanent accounts shouldn’t worry; they will remain as such.
