My self-imposed sick day and the subsequent water company-imposed lack of electricity have led me to absolute boredom. I killed 20 minutes washing dishes.
I may as well use the time to do something a but more stimulating. Enter a book.

Without a Sense of Power
August 6th, 2008 · No Comments
I hate getting sick during the summer. Well, I hate getting sick anytime really, but particularly in summer. I’m only ever truly comfortable in cool temperatures, and when I’m ill, it can get ugly.
DC WASA, the local water company, decided this would be the week to replace any existing lead lines on my street. Over [...]

A Night at the Drive-In
July 22nd, 2008 · No Comments
In case you missed the Twitter tweets, facebook statuses and my housemate’s journal entry on the subject, I headed out to Bengie’s Drive-In Theater on Friday night. I’d never been to a drive-in. And yes, it was an experience.
Friday’s show was a triple bill: Kung Fu Panda (better than I expected, but still kinda meh); [...]

Year 8

The forgotten wedding anniversary has been a situation comedy plot device for decades. Consider Lucy Ricardo jilted in Hollywood or the last minute gift of an alarm system given to Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced “Bouquet”). In both instances, the men in these relationships ultimately got in trouble for their lapses in memory.
I too forgot an anniversary [...]

Today’s Washington Post has a piece on pet adoption practices with local humane societies. Some looking to adopt a furry creature find the process daunting and experience severe disappointment if they’re denied. After seeing the Post piece, DCist posted an entry today including feedback from those of us on staff — myself included [...]

Approaching 38
June 7th, 2008 · 7 Comments
On the personal development front, I discovered this week the loss of 3 pounds over the last month. In my slow-going battle of the bulge, I’m now 29 pounds lighter than my all-time high.
Armed with this knowledge, I dared to try on my “skinny shorts,” in my case a size 38 pair I bought on [...]

Flash What?!
June 6th, 2008 · 5 Comments
My friend (and former colleague) T.J. and I have been discussing a new project he’s working on at his job. It’s very pretty, but it is just too heavy in file size thanks to a Flash piece that’s to be included.
Me: is there *supposed* to be that expansive white space?
T.J.: no
T.J.: that’s the flash hole
It [...]

Phở Shizzle
June 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment
On New Year’s Eve, I had a brief conversation with a friend of mine and we resolved to hang out more in 2008. We finally got around to keeping that resolution last night.
I met up with P.D. last night for phở, a cuisine I’d never had before. We met up in at Phở 75 in [...]

To Have Confidence
June 2nd, 2008 · 2 Comments
Rob Goodlatte’s post on becoming confident by faking it reminds me of a few things. First, it reminded me of a Peggy Bundy quote from the Fox television series “Married… With Children”:
If you can’t feel it, fake it.
Second — as if to remind me how truly gay I can be — it reminded me of [...]

Abuela, 1905–2008

As I prepared for a trip out west tomorrow, I got a reminder of my last trip today. Mom called me at the office this afternoon to tell me that my great-grandmother, whose grave illness was the catalyst for our trip down to Puerto Rico last month, passed away this morning. She made it to [...]
