With all the recent hoopla over Katy Perry and whether or not she actually ever kissed a girl herself, it seems as though many have forgotten a pioneer of pop music lesbianism: Jill Sobule. Below is her 1995 video clip for “I Kissed a Girl.”

And yes, that is Fabio making a cameo appearance in the video. I’m not sure if this predates his unbelief that it’s not butter.

On my recent trip to Columbus, I was subjected to Ms. Perry’s ditty more times than I care to count. Quite frankly, it made what was to me an already irritating tune even more so. I even had to tweet my displeasure. You probably would too if you heard it play ad nauseum on a single satellite radio channel.

When I returned home, I played the 13-year-old Jill Sobule tune and all was right with the world. I’m so glad she kissed a girl.

Incidentally, Ms. Sobule is considerably less hostile to Ms. Perry’s version than I am.
