Tina Turner performs an encore.

Tina Turner performs an encore.

Last night, I joined Michael for dinner at La Tasca, followed by what was — for me — the concert of the year: Tina Turner.

Oh yes, I saw Tina. And oh yes, the seats were good.

Invite to Come

As I logged into facebook on Thursday night, I noticed that one of my friends (of the I’ve-known-you-a-while-and-think-you’re-teh-awesome variety) added Global Orgasm Day to his events. I clicked the link, read the description, and decided it might be a lark to add it to my events, so I did.

Whenever you add an event in facebook, it changes the “Add to My Events” link to one that reads, “Invite People to Come.” Given the context of that particular event, I got a mighty good giggle-snort out of it, but not an orgasm. It’s hard to do that when you’re otherwise under the weather like I was when I added it to my events.

And in case you were wondering and didn’t bother to click the link above, Global Orgasm Day is to take place at the time of the solstice; that’s 1:08 a.m. on Saturday, December 22 here in DC. (If you’re not on the American eastern seaboard, check for your local time.)

* … You’re just expected to come!

I got home from the iPhone launch at about 2 a.m.; not bad, considering I left the store at nearly 1.

The launch event went without a hitch. A guy named Eric, the first person in our line at about 4 a.m. this morning, walked out with two iPhone units. We got through the rest of the line within 90 minutes, though people continued to enter the store in waves as the night wore on.

I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of the iPhone’s capabilities before today, especially given public complaints about the speed of AT&T’s network. I got to play with a demo model extensively tonight — I even made a phone call, which sounded great — and while it’s not perfect, it exceeded my expectations.

Do I want? Yes. Will I get? Not yet. First, I can’t rationalize spending that kind of money on a phone for myself, at least not right now. Second, my current carrier (Amp’d) rides on Verizon’s network, which works underground in the Metro system; I like having that convenience should an emergency arise (and it did earlier this week). Third, I’m saving some money for a larger Apple purchase later this year, specifically a MacBook Pro.

I’m not much of the early adopter type, anyway.

Tonight was fun, but I’m thoroughly exhausted.

Update 7/9/2007: And here’s the part where I am a total hypocrite: I caved and bought and activated an iPhone.

Not sure if there’s any official recognition for this, but today is Kilt Day. Quoth the Kilt Day website:

While there are many throughout the world that wear a kilt or other men’s unbifurcated garments (MUGs) every day, Kilt Day is a special day. It is a day in which everyone that owns a kilt should make an extra effort to break out their favorite kilt and show they are proud to stand up to ‘trouser tyranny.’

Lately, there have been quite a few little lunchtime (and even breakfasttime) events going on around here at work. A couple of weeks ago, everyone who worked on the first floor (including me) was treated to some sort of edible commodity everyday. One day there was pizza for lunch; another we had mini-subs; nachos & popcorn; ice cream; etc. Last on Hallowe’en, there was a pie-eating contest. A talent show was even held a few days before that.

The festivities are apparently continuing. Yesterday on my way to lunch, I ran into the [really hot-looking] delivery guys from Papa John’s pizza down the street. I helped hold the doors open so they could get to the elevator bank (and because I wanted to get a good look at them). But I digress ….

So, this afternoon I walk out the back door of my office to make a restroom stop before I go to get my lunch. Just a few feet outside the door, three bunches of helium-filled balloons were being brought into the hallway. Two bunches had balloons of red, black and golden-yellow; the last bunch had white, pink, and some purplish variation of maroon.

With those color combinations, I can’t imagine what their celebrating, so I’ve come up with my own conclusion:

They’re celebrating Valentine’s Day and the reuinification of Germany. Unfortunately, they’re way off either way.
