These are my links for 25 May:
During the winter, D.C. harbors the strange phenomenon that is the weather wimp. They complain about the cold and rush off to the store to buy (horde, actually) milk, bread and toilet paper.
This week, we Washingtonians got our first taste of late summer two months early, when the temperatures went from low 70s to high 80s seemingly overnight.
A choice quote from the linked article:
“It’s kind of ironic that people are complaining that it’s too hot. Last week, it was too cold and everyone was complaining,” said Michael Halpert, head of forecast operations at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs.
“There is no ‘just right,’ is there?”
Not this week, there hasn’t. (And for the record, I rather preferred the cooler weather. I rather enjoy walking extended distances to get some exercise in.)
Since “weather wimp” has long-enjoyed a wintertime association, I’m going to coin a slightly different phrase for the summertime ones: the “weather wuss.” D.C.’s location — on that of a former swamp — makes for a long and sticky summer season. Adapt now or get out of the way!
