A parody of those animated PSAs attached to just about every “G.I. Joe” episode I’ve ever seen, featuring Sen. John McCain.

'That One'It’s the phrase everyone seems to be talking about. During last night’s town hall style debate, Sen. John McCain referred to Sen. Barack Obama as “that one” while answering a question from moderator Tom Brokaw.

Brokaw: Should we fund a Manhattan-like project that develops a nuclear bomb to deal with global energy and alternative energy or should we fund 100,000 garages across America, the kind of industry and innovation that developed Silicon Valley?

McCain: I think pure research and development investment on the part of the United States government is certainly appropriate. I think once it gets into productive stages, that we ought to, obviously, turn it over to the private sector.

By the way, my friends, I know you grow a little weary with this back-and-forth. It was an energy bill on the floor of the Senate loaded down with goodies, billions for the oil companies, and it was sponsored by Bush and Cheney.

You know who voted for it? You might never know. That one. You know who voted against it? Me.

(Source CNN; emphasis mine.)

Seriously? Seriously.

Beyond that, I found nothing particularly memorable about the debate. For the most part, I watched it on Current, because it was far more entertaining to see people’s comments pop up on the screen.

(And as for the picture above which I quickly cobbled together, come on. Tell me you didn’t see that reference coming.)

In a move that probably surprises very few, the Examiner endorses the McCain/Palin ticket in the 2008 presidential race. Even with their glowing review of Sen. John McCain’s political career, they offer up some advice to the senator and his running mate:

[Sen. John] McCain must rein in his legendary temper and his tendency to personalize differences over policy. Presidential leadership requires a steady hand, always, and McCain must lead from his head, not from his heart. He should surround himself with the best appointees available, then demand their candid advice, especially when it hurts. [Gov. Sarah] Palin possesses magnificent political gifts now, but her limited experience in national and international affairs makes it incumbent on her to be extra diligent in mastering the realities of higher office.

Um, okay. But I’m still not voting for them.

According to the Washington Post, an ad (pictured at right; click thumbnail for full size version) claiming that Sen. John McCain won the first debate between him and Sen. Barack Obama ran on the Wall Street Journal’s site this morning.

Oh, and the debate hasn’t even happened yet.

In a week where McCain not only made a big deal about wanting to postpone tonight’s debate, but also blew off an appearance on late night television to rush back to Washington, this latest “gaffe” leads me to think that the Arizona senator is running on the “no such thing as bad press” theory. Either that, or he’s clairvoyant; given his assertion until earlier this week that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong,” and the economic fallout we’re now seeing, I’m inclined to think otherwise.

Now, I can’t say with absolute certainty that the screenshot isn’t doctored. It was sent into the Post by “an astute reader.” I can say I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if this wasn’t an accident on the campaign’s part.

Tonight’s debate begins at 9:00 ET.

I guess CNN’s Campbell Brown grew a pair. In the video clip below, she calls on the McCain campaign to allow the Alaskan governor to act like a real candidate. Specifically, to “Let her have a real news conference with real questions.”

A drawn-to-scale bar chart breaking down the details of tax plans from both Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. Personally, given my salary, I think I’d prefer Obama’s plan. (via hit or miss)

In a “Special Comment,” MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann slams the Republican Party and the candidates on their presidential ticket for treating the events of September 11, 2001, as a sort of trademark.

Since I spent a considerable amount of time blogging election-related stuff during the Dem’s convention last week, it only seems fair that I pay some attention to election-related stuff on the GOP side, right? Um. Yeah. Okay.

Anyway, as if it was going to be a big surprise or something, the Log Cabin Republicans officially endorsed the McCain/Palin ticket. I think a bigger surprise came four years ago when they actually didn’t endorse anyone for president. They actually recognized in 2004 that their party’s candidate was not good for the LGBT community at large.

Um, neither is the candidate in ‘08. Just sayin’.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that a lot of people were surprised by Sen. John McCain’s pick for vice-president, Gov. Sarah Palin, myself included. Frankly, I’d never heard of the woman until this morning when I saw friends on both facebook and twitter call her as his veep pick.

The Log Cabin Republicans, the LGBT Republican organization, had this to say about Palin:

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin can help Sen. McCain win this election by appealing to independent and young voters. She’s a mainstream Republican who will unite the Party and serve John McCain well as Vice President.

Wait, hang on. The GOP was divided on something? Zuh?!

Further:

Gov. Palin is an inclusive Republican who will help Sen. McCain appeal to gay and lesbian voters.

I’m guessing that’s not because of her stance on marriage equality. (She’s against it.) Maybe it’s because she bears a resemblance to our favorite hard-drinking, pill-popping gal pal TV character: Karen Walker from “Will & Grace.”

She also seems to resemble Tina Fey, whom I don’t really have much of an opinion on.

Either way, I smell a candidate for Totally Looks Like….

In a move that looks like it’s meant to draw the Hillary Clinton supporters who don’t want to vote for Sen. Barack Obama, Sen. John McCain picked Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate. She is the second female ever selected to run for vice-president; the first was Geraldine Ferraro who ran with Walter Mondale on the Democratic ticket in 1984.

A few friends of mine called it earlier. Holy Hell!
