A modern stadium design for the Washington Nationals was unveiled at a press conference today. The 41,000 seat stadium will be built along the Anacostia waterfront and offer views of both the river and the Capitol dome.
Construction of the stadium is scheduled for completion in 2008. Retail shops and restaurants will also spring up nearby. The Navy Yard Metro station will also undergo renovations to accommodate game attendees.
This week’s Washington Blade reports that the Washington Nationals may host a “gay night” at RFK Stadium. The event was proposed by Team D.C., a local GLBT sports group, which contacted the Nationals’ group sales office about acquiring tickets for a game in July.
If it happens, the Nationals will join the Red Sox, the Cubs, the Pirates, the Blue Jays, the Giants, and the Phillies in hosting a gay night at their local ball parks. Incidentally, the Phillies gay night game, on August 18, is against the Nationals. (More info on these games at GayBaseballDays.com.)
Team D.C.’s request came one month after a Newsday report which quoted Nationals pitcher T.J. Tucker as saying, “I’ve got nothing against those people, but I don’t get why anyone would want to be like that.”
