The New York tabloids are nothing if not consistent, and today’s front pages are no exception, even over the news that the once retired and now reinstated Brett Favre is heading to the N.Y. Jets’ roster from the Green Bay Packers. Moving from one green team to another, I suppose.

But the tabloids’ headlines leave me a little disappointed. I mean, one of them had a great opportunity to make an apt Broadway reference. Think West Side Story, which is not only set in New York City, but also has this line early on:

When you’re a Jet / You’re a Jet all the way….

Umm, hello?

At least then they could have saved themselves the embarrassment of having incredibly similar headlines and teaser text splashed all over their exterior pages. It’s like two women wearing the same dress to a party and having a catfight over it like they do on television.

West Side Story will be revived on Broadway next March, with previews running sometime in February. The show will not only enjoy a pre-Broadway run at the National Theatre here in D.C. for a month beginning in mid-December, but will also be somewhat tweaked for authenticity. According to Playbill:

The production “will introduce the unprecedented element of selectively weaving Spanish throughout both the book and songs,” according to the July 16 announcement.

West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals of all time, so I find this a bit exciting. I always wanted to take part in a production, but the opportunity to do so never arose. Given the median age of the main characters — or at least my perception of it — I’m probably past it. That and I think I lack the appropriate body type. At best, I suspect I could either be a stagehand or a strangely ethnic Officer Krupke.
