As I took the train to work this morning, I kept my iPhone in my pocket for the duration of the trip. Most of the apps I use require a data signal of some sort and since I was neither listening to music nor playing a game, I didn’t have much need to look at it.

When we pulled into the Gallery Place-Chinatown station, though, I remembered something I wanted to jot down in Notes. I pulled the device from my pocket; lo and behold, I had an AT&T signal. A strong AT&T signal. Full bars.

Underground, people!

For well over a decade, Verizon—née Bell Atlantic—had an exclusive stranglehold over the underground mobile phone signals in D.C.’s Metrorail system. With the exception of MVNO carriers that used Verizon’s network—as a former customer, Amp’d comes to mind—and Sprint’s tenuous connection via roaming, users of any other network were just plain SOL if they needed to make a quick call while underground.

Earlier this year, Metro announced that the big four carriers—AT&T, Verizon, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile—would build a network that allows their customers to use their phones in the underground stations. The plan was reiterated in a recent online chat on the Washington Post’s site. The busiest stations would be outfitted by October; the remainder are slated for completion by 2012.

Surprised by my discovery, I tweeted via text message to see if it really worked or if my phone was playing tricks on me. True enough, while my train held at the station at 8:28 a.m., my tweet went through and posted right away. I was floored.

The tweet I posted at 8:28 a.m. today while I was underground in Metro's Gallery Place-Chinatown station.

All that said, I have a favor to ask of my Washingtonian friends on AT&T: if you go through Gallery Place-Chinatown station, check your phone for a signal and report back to me.

Air New Zealand and Virgin America are just two airlines that are part of a growing trend to keep passengers' attention during safety briefings.

In concert with its recent ad campaign, Air New Zealand put together an airline safety video to match.

While it’s not quite as—erm—cheeky, it reminded me of Virgin America’s safety video, which I saw for the first time on my trip to San Francisco last year.

Safety videos like these are certainly a refreshing change from the staid live demos and overly corporate videos airline passengers are usually treated to. My trip to Puerto Rico—on AirTran—featured the live demo. Two forthcoming round trips I have on Southwest will probably feature the same.

Metro makes good on NextBus promise a day early.

In a time when Metro could use some good PR, it appears the NextBus system is up a day early. I just checked it out myself a few minutes ago and saw some rather appalling headways for my bus line.

Metro's NextBus service showing the eastbound D6 line with headways of 9, 25 and 70 (WTF?!) minutes.

Okay, I’ll concede the first two aren’t so bad, but 45 minutes between the second and third buses?

Even with the ridiculous headways, at least we commuters can now make a better informed choice when it comes to transit. Using the example above, I know I wouldn’t make the bus in 9 minutes – it’d take me that long to walk to the stop; if I miss the bus coming in 25 mins., I can instead hop on one of the 3 rail lines near my office. If I happen to know there’s a massive delay on any or all of the rail lines, I can opt for a cab or just start walking instead. And yes, I’ve done the 4+ mile walk from my house to my office; the last time I did it, it took just under an hour and a half… and a really sore right knee.

Years ago, one of my high school literature teachers – I had at least six over the course of four years and for the life of me can’t remember which one – told my class, “Troubles come in threes.” I’m starting to think that particular lit. teacher, whomever it was, reached way too many students’ minds.

After last week’s shocking news that a certain pop star died, people began linking it with the recent deaths of a television sidekick and a single-season “Angel,” effectively creating a troubled trifecta. As if to prove the threes theory is complete bunk – and it is – a product pitchman passed on Sunday. And really, as someone on twitter smartly pointed out, hundreds of thousands of people die every day. That some of them achieved some level of notoriety is mere coincidence.

Speaking of coincidence, the passing of my aunt last week completed a familial trifecta of sorts. My youngest uncle died nearly 20 years ago on June 14; his mother – my grandmother – just over 5 years ago on June 4.

Not only are they all June deaths, their dates all ended in 4: June 14; June 4; June 24. Almost spooky, but not really.
